Charles Oliveira , the uncrowned UFC lightweight champion , will be looking to maintain his spot atop the division. The dangerous Islam Makhachev is out to prove the doubters wrong and show why he is poised to become a champion. The two will meet for lightweight gold at UFC 280 on October 22.

The fight will take place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Built in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the venue has been dubbed “Fight Island” by the UFC.

Oliveira made his professional debut in 2008 and joined the UFC in 2010. He has a 21-8 record in the company, along with a no-decision, and an 11-fight win streak.

“Do Bronx” beat Michael Chandler at UFC 262 for the lightweight title, but at UFC 274 he missed weight for his fight against Justin Gaethje and was stripped of the belt. Oliveira won the match via submission, but was unable to hold on as champion.

Makhachev is a former sambo world champion who debuted as a professional in MMA in 2010 and debuted in the UFC in 2015. He has 10 consecutive victories; his last fight was a TKO victory over Bobby Green in February.

There will also be a bantamweight title match between champion Aljamain Sterling and former champion TJ Dillashaw .

Sterling made his pro debut in 2011. “The Funk Master” joined the UFC in 2014 and is riding a six-fight win streak. He defeated Petr Yan by disqualification in a fight for the UFC bantamweight title in 2021. In April, he won a rematch against Yan to defend the belt.

Dillashaw made his professional debut in 2010 and joined the UFC in 2011. He beat Renan Barao in 2014 on “The Ultimate Fighter” for the bantamweight title, which he lost to Dominick Cruz in 2016. After winning two fights in a row, he won to Cody Garbrandt in 2017 to regain the belt.

In 2019, Dillashaw faced Henry Cejudo for the flyweight title and lost. Following the fight, TJ was suspended for testing positive for a banned substance, recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO). He was stripped of the bantamweight title. He returned to action in 2021, defeating Cory Sandhagen via split decision. Since then he has been recovering from a knee injury.
