Joe Cordina wants to win back the belt he never lost, while Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov is ready to prove himself a worthy champion. Something has to give when Rakhimov defends the IBF featherweight title against the former champion on April 22.
The fight takes place at the Cardiff International Arena in Cordina’s backyard in Wales. It will air on DAZN in the US and UK.
A bronze medalist at the 2014 World University Championships, Rakhimov turned pro in 2015. The Tajikistan native drew Joseph Diaz in 2021 in a bout for the IBF super featherweight championship, but rallied to claim the title. vacant version of that title by knocking out Zelfa Barrett last November.
A 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Cordina turned professional in 2017. He won the Commonwealth lightweight title in 2018 and the coveted British championship the following year.
Now having recovered from surgery, an angry Cordina is motivated to take back the title he believes is his.
“It was pretty frustrating to be there and see those two (Rakhimov and Barrett), I’m not going to lie,” Cordina said. “I looked at him (Rakhimov) and said: ‘I’m going to fuck you. ‘See that (squeezes right hand)? I’m going to land that right on your chin. He kept saying, ‘I’m going to fuck you,’ that’s all he was saying.
“In my head, that’s my belt, I need to get it back. I never lost my title in the ring, I haven’t had a chance to defend it. I’m going into this fight as a challenger, but in my head, I’m a world champion and I have the confidence of a world champion.”
